THE SITUATION: You’ve just arrived in Delhi and want to catch an auto rickshaw across town. You hail one, but instead of offering a verbal answer to your request, the driver tips his head from side to side and slowly blinks. From the neck up, the gesture is inscrutable. But he’s waving his hand for you to get in. Confusion prevails. A head-tilting tutorial is in order.

BACKGROUND: At its most graceful, there’s something Stevie Wonder-esque in the Indian head tilt—an easy rhythmic sway that, once familiar, can prove soothing and even addictive. You could devote a lifetime to learning any of the hundreds of languages that have evolved on the Indian subcontinent. But from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, the metronome-like head tilt offers a universal means of communication. Interpreting and replicating this single non-verbal cue offers you more than just a way to be understood while in India—it’s a chance to employ a unique gesture familiar to one sixth of humanity.

WHAT NOT TO DO: Head-tilting neophytes often mistakenly assume that the movement starts at the top of the head, resulting in a jerky and unnatural motion.

THE BASICS: The secret is to lead with your chin. To practice, stand in front of a mirror with your head in a neutral position. Using your chin to control the movement, allow your head to fall slightly to one side. The angle between your head’s neutral position and the tilt should be no more than 15 degrees (just the slightest of dips).

Return to neutral and repeat the motion on the opposite side. Make your movements from one side to the other gentle rather than springy, as if your head were suspended in fluid.

WHEN TO TILT: Since head-tilting often acts as a non-verbal “Uh huh,” it can replace a spoken confirmation as well as convey that you are listening to the speaker. To show enthusiasm during a conversation, smile and ramp up the speed of your tilting.

HOW OFTEN: Four tilts of your head are sufficient for conveying “Yes” (two to the right and two to the left, alternating from side to side).

A TILT'S MANY MEANINGS: In its myriad iterations, the Indian head nod can mean “Yes,” “Nice to meet you” and “I agree to the price you have just mentioned.” It can also mean “Maybe,” “Hell no,” and “You are the enemy of intelligence.” Interpreting the meaning requires time, practice, a little self-effacement and a lot of humor. With a little practice, South African Wendy John found it made all the difference. “For me,” she said, “head tilting became a way to actually connect with people and for them to see that I’m locally attuned.”

hey folks... yes i know its been an age since ive posted.... but this too im afraid isnt really going to be a newsy post....!! Just really tied up with reporT writing for my experiments happening in college.Its just been downright M-A-D~!!! Today i had one of the worst possible experiments and its bugging the hell out of me... i promise to update sometime over the weekend if i get the chance...! :) That is of course if everyone remembers who i am and wouldnt mind hearing what Ive been upto for the last month or 2...!! :P

My grandmother passed away last night,at 1130pm at the age of 90 in her sleep... for those of you who met her will know what I mean when i say she was an amazing human being..whether it be the numerous things she said or the way she just said them... i will miss her terribly.. but i know she is at peace where she is now...

The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Sally. "What in bag?" asked the old woman. Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, "It's a bottle of wine.! I got it for my husband." The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two. Then, speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said: "Good trade....."

The other nite,last Sunday to be more exact I went out with Aditi (mixedchild)and a couple of her friends.We went to High Spirits,which is this new longue bar cum pub,somewhere that I hadnt been to so it was a good day to see what it was all about.Aditi and I hadnt really met up in ages... honestly.. I think I met her last on my bday,but it was great fun catching up after so long.:) We went with these other friends of hers... Arun & Mandy( I cant for the life of me remember his real name so i guess his nickname will have to do! ;) ),those 2 are a little older from the lots of ppl we normally hang out with but it worked out pretty well as none of the lecherous lot of guys around dared to come near us mainly coz of Arun giving the impression that he was this big bouncer and would thump anyone that would come near us.:) Oh yeah.. K wasnt around that day becoz he was studying, and since i really wanted to get out of the house it really worked out well.:)

This outing really brought back memories for Aditi and me...thanks to the music that was playing that nite...it was Retro Nite,though none of the regular stuff was played...It had a fantastic blend of music that my folks would have listened to,then us in school and then us in college...and the kind we totally would have danced the nights or in those time.. afternoons away.It brought back times of the past... mainly coz we literally were transported back into our school times of the days of "afternoon parties" and "dance parties"at home. Do you remember those times? When circles were made of all the guys and girls and then one girl and one guy were placed in the centre and made to dance with each other... most of the cases we termed as a "couple" after that.Gosh how young were we?? ;) Can you remember that time? :)

I also remember the album the were most probably from,mainly coz there were some songs that were played exactly in that order and im sure of the album coz it was such a big hit at that point of time.EVERYONE and i repeat everyone used to have that album playing in their stereo systems for their "dance parties" hehe...It was called Channel [V] Hits, and it had this maroon cover with a button in the centre with the [V] on it .. as if something like a fly button from a pair of jeans.Its unbelivable that I even remember the look of it or even the name but it kinda just came back to me when i was listening to the songs...(ok ill be honest.. it was playing on my brain so much when we left that place that i HAD to get the name... and suddenly it did along with it looked...)

That was one absolutly fun night down memory lane for the 2 of us...:) ....and of course some pictures of that nite....Heres one picture that didnt come out well coz of the darkness but I liked the way the light reflected on the walls to give the graffiti some life.:) Heres one of Aditi,Mandy and Arun,then one of Aditi,Mandy n moi and of course last but not the least Aditi n me.:)

Theres always been something about the movie "Dirty Dancing" that tends to draw me to it everytime it shows on the tv,I guess thats why its been classified as my favorite movie of all times.
I cant really remember the first time I watched the movie though i remember it was with these big gaps in between as at that time I wasnt really "allowed" to watch the kissing or make out scenes in movies.
I also remember that.that movie made me always want this amazing "dance instructor" to dance into my life and dance away with me into a different world. :) At that point of time(and honestly even now at times) I related so much to "Baby", being the plain jane with the big mop of curls and finding it so crazy that a good looking guy would ever give me a second look.*sigh*

Of course the music and the dance scenes in the movie made it extra special for me.Theres this part in the movie where Baby has to see "Johnny" off because he looses his job,the song "Shes like the Wind" playing in the background made me actually feel the sting of having to say good bye to someone so close to me.I do know that he came back but the setting of the mood,song & of course weather all moulded into the movie so well that it made me melt.

As I got older,different parts of the movie would move me but this one remained constant.:) When I think of the first love making scene between Baby and Johnny with the rain in the background,it always make me think back on how i woulld want to imagine me in that time and space.I even smelt the rain kissed earth coming into the room from the outside....how real is that? ;)

For those of you who have seen the movie,who could forget the last dance sequence?Till today, if I do happen to come across the scene or for that matter any scene in that movie... itll never fail to put a nostalgic smile upon my face.........

XMen III- The Last Stand......

X MEN III is awesome fun!! :)

Me and K went and watched it yesterday completely on a whim(Though I have to admit i was going on and on about watching it constantly hehe..),and i wasnt in the least bit dissapointed.:) I must admit when they killed off some pretty importent characters I was seriously wondering what on earth would happen to the rest of the movie but it really did sum up the trilogy really well.:) Agreed the action sequences were really "action-y" but hell,it was an X Men movie based on a comic book so it was bound to be that way...nevertheless it was still worth the watch. Also,one thing which i liked about the movie was that they didnt overplay somethings,I mean it was done pretty simply and actually in a nice way.I personally enjoyed it a lot and I have to say K had a blast watching it too.Before I forget I wanted to add that from now on if K and I are watching any movies together I'll prob be putting up our ratings of the film up on here for you to see so that you can have an idea on how we rated the movie at the end of the posts.Itll be on 10... with 10 obviously being downright exellent!!! :D

Just remember to watch both the previous XMen movies before this one or else you probably wont understand whats going on...plus its like the last one of the Trilogy so you might want to be updated and informed.Another thing,since im not a total XMen comic book fan I tend to have gotten confused with the characters names... so for those of you who like me dont know all the names.Here you go.

What ARE those XMen Characters names??

I honestly think,for those of you who like the comics or for even those of you who just want to check out the pure action scenes in it you will enjoy it throughly. :D

Oh.

I should mention. DON'T leave before the end of the credits.

Nowwwwwwwwwwwwwww.......based on what was shown at the end of the credits I am totally sure theyre coming up with the another film soon.Got it straight from the FOX's "mouth"! Hopefully soon!! Im dying to know whats going to happen....yes I know i dont read the comics much but I definatly am enjoying the movies a hell of a lot!! hehe..timmonsyou definatly missed out on a good movie to watch in the theatre!! This is probably one of those movies you just have to watch it BIG AND LOUD :D Sorry foxyasiangrl I know you didnt like the movie much but it IS based on a comic book after all so most of tht stuff will have to be over the top.;)

Yennyway,now that my list of movies for this week has come to an end i dont really know about the newer movies coming out this week (mixedchild any idea of anything good coming out?),either way,will probably know by the weekend as thats when the new ones come out. Though, I do want to see MI 3, then theres The Wild and last but not the least Phir Heri Pheri..(sequel to Heri Pheri) :)

8.5/10 Mainly coz of the action featured in the movie and at the same time being able to to keep it simple.Once you watch the movie you'll probably know wht i mean.

So I went and saw Fanaa yday,it wasnt as great as I would have imagined it to be. I mean it did have an exellent lil twist in the movie which they could have done SO much more than what they actually did.One thing i didnt do was read the synopsis of the film before going for it so that I could really watch the film for what it was.It started off well with Aamir Khan playing his ever familar and very famous "tapori" character,with everyone laughing over stuff that they would definaty have fun with but sadly it ended on a HIGHLY cliche'd note.:( (yup mixedchild you were right about certain aspects of the film)
Ah well,I did enjoy the movie mainly coz of the AK charm,considering he has been my fave hindi actor since day one... so with that I am a bit biased.;) Its still him and he can still play roles of him being a 19-20 yr old when hes pushing close to 40 now...heck at the end of it hes still funny! ;) I just wish he could have added some more substance to the role he played in this movie.

Yup,Thats what I thought about the movie...oh i did forget to mention the music,I did kinda like one or 2 of the main songs,but what i liked the most was actually some of the background scores which they played for when the introduced certain characters in the film.Im not mentioning who right now for those of you who havnt seen it as yet.:) Once a majority of you watch it ill tell you what music im talking about.:)

Next I wanna definatly go see X Men III,heard a lot of good reviews about the film from ppl...so lets see when I can go see that now,itll all depend on Ks studying... poor guy has his exams ... exam rather coming up on the 8th...and hes not feeling to well...which could be also be due the change of weather.Which is very cloudy and wet right now.Monsoon has definatly come to Pune.!! :D

Last night, I went over to Ks place and we watched the movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with Robert Downey Jr,Val Kilmer starring in it.

The movie was good fun,definatly keeps you glued to the screen if nothing else to get what Robert Downey is saying...theyre so many things he says in the film and SO fast tht u literally have to keep listening or ull miss what he said.All those watching for it for the first time .. take it from me.. i had to keep going back a scene to understand what he was saying...and K was getting irritated by the second with me and my "what did he say?? .. arrey wht did he say" moments...*laughs* If it wasnt tht, it was the constant "sssshhhh baby im trying to hear what he said" tht definatly made him look at me like there was something warped on my nose.. hehe.

Its a crime thriller with a dark storyline,but however heavy tht may seem its just the opposite,you really are completely amused by the amount of stuff which is shown and said in the film.:) To give you a bit of a laugh... Val Kilmer plays a gay private investigator who is brought in to teach Downey (a struggling actor)how to play the role of the same...;)...(and no i dont have anything against gay people..its just funny him playing that role! ;) Better to make tht clear)

Anyway,its a definatly must watch movie as far as Im concerned.:) So those of you who are interested or perhaps want some amusement with a huge dash of excitement go watch it.:D

I was told if i liked this movie Id probably like Spartan,Bubba Ho-tep or The Hard Word....has anybody seen these movies? Intresting?

Movie Over the Weekend...

Went and saw The Da Vinci Code last nite,I have to say I enjoyed every minute of it...:) I guess it was a good thing that I hadnt read the entire book by then huh? :) K since he loved the book so much...though i have to mention he was upset with the ending of the book...think he found it abrupt.. but he loved the fact the movie remained a lot like the book.For me,I felt the movie was very well done...dont seem to understand why it had such bad reviews!! Maybe ppl are just looking for perfection.:P

Anyway,My sister also went and saw the movie last nite we havnt yet compared reviews yet but im sure we will soon enough becoz I didnt know initially that I was going for the movie so i told her not to tell me about it... but when she left he mentioned she might just drop hints the entire time till i watched the movie...sad thing is her friends and her got these really bad neck yanking seats,first row from the screen and the corner seats!!!! Ouch!!! Well.. haha..lucky for me,when K and i went for the movie not only did we get good seats(considering its the first weekend of the movie), we actually got them at a fairly decent price..:D ..now wait till my sister tells me about her experiences...ill tell her about mine too..bwahahahaha!! :D

Now that I enjoyed The Da Vinci Code so much,I cant wait till Angels and Demons is made so that i can watch that too...question is if i should read the book at all or should i just wait..?? Considering i enjoyed the movie so much without knowing the ending.. im wondering.:) Oh i forgot to mention that the movie was shown with the silly disclaimer at the beginning and the end!! Like it makes that much of a difference...i just wish they hadnt botched up the ending with tht stupid disclaimer banner cutting the "starry nite" sequence when Tom Hanks was ending off with the music in the background.:P

Ah well.. all in all Ive had a nice "expensive" weekend...I guess once in a while its alright.:) Next on my movie cards is Fanaa & X-Men III hope to go see them soon...:)

Hey,Its been a while since Ive posted anything on here but I just have been really busy... well maybe not busy of the real sense of the word but maybe just pre occupied with all the stuff happening at home.:)

My sister got back into town from college a couple of weeks ago and since then the family has been pretty much doing things together..To start off with it was my folks 27th Wedding Anniversary on the 21st.Which we celebrated by drinking Champagne & going out for dinner with another family to Malaka Spice,a South Asian restaraunt out here.Im more than sure Ive mentioned this place before in my previous posts as its one of Ks and my all time faves.We started off with Chicken Satay and a Crunchy Beansprout Salad,as the main course we had Grilled Fish, Thai Green Curry with Prawns which we had with the Chefs Special Herb Brown rice.For dessert Namita and I had smuggled a Chocolate Mousse Cake earlier on that evening do as to suprise my parents after dinner.:) What was really nice was that since the management knew me from before,basically as a patent customer we a got a dessert on the house.:) So we had the cake and they gave us the Crispy Honey Noodles with Ice Cream...yum!! :D Dad was very happy with that as thats one of his fave desserts of the place...:)
Needless to say that was one good meal ..:) :) We took a few other pictures before we left the house...here they are... a couple of Namita & me clowning around... and another.Yup we did eventually settle down and take this one,though I get the feeling my legs look really weird.:P Then of course... one of mommy and her girls and of course daddy and his girls...:)
There are more pictures of the dinner which i couldnt put up as for some reason the flickr page screwed up on me.. hopefully next time Ill have that sorted out.:)

Besides that Nams and I went shopping this weekend..picked up a nice lot of tops..:) :) Which i shall have pictures of soon i hope...also went looking for kurtas & Osho Chappals (timmons are you reading this? Send me sizes!!) The weekend also brought in some nice rain showers only to leave the nice earthy smell lingering in the air...:) I have a feeling monsoon will definatly be here soon enough,,,:D

Oh anyone watched American Idol this time around?? I so was wishing Chris would make it... or even Elliot for that matter... :P Wht the heck did Katherine do to reach that far???:P:P Guess they need ratings one way or the other...:P

Papa and I ended up going to Coconut Grove instead,which yup had the same kind of food only that it emphasized on Mangalorean and Andhra food.Papa ordered for the Andhra Guntur Prawn Curry

and I ordered for the Crab Gassi(pronounced Gussi NOT GASSY!! ;) )
Both the dishes were eaten with plain steamed rice.:) Yum~! I had so much curry in mine that I actually had to curry some back home.:) Not that I mind of course,lunch for me this afternoon is ready... well unless papa gets to it first.haha. Oh Guntur is a type of really hot chilli used in Andhra cooking,for those intrested in using the spice for hot food in the future.:)

Besides that not much happening,oh Im waiting for the realese of The Da Vinci Code out here,but as usual there are some problems or the other with the censorship board!!! :p Why dont some of these "protestors" get it... the book is already out.. what difference does it make if the movies out too... if you dont want to watch it.DONT!! :P Anyway,Im hoping its realesed the day it said it would be out... i really want to go see it...:):)

Been watching a lot of Discovery Travel and Living the last couple of days which might I just say is an awesome channel... for someone like me who likes .. no lemme say LOVES food..there are a couple of shows that I really enjoy watching.One of which is Gordan Ramsey's Hells Kitchen.... its a crazy show....for those of you who want to know what im watching...(foxyasiangrl,you might enjoy this one)

Speaking of food... my dad and I are going out for a bit of South Indian food tonight,to be more precise..Kerala food..:) Cant really argue with that... love the food..we're heading out to Southern Spice . Why just the 2 of us going? Mums away in bombay to pick up my sister from the airport who's arriving tommorow EARLYY morning fromCollege for the holidays.Dad and I tend to order in a lot when my moms out of town which again I cant really complain about... not that mum doesnt make great food but heck I like ordering in too..:):) And this place tht we're going to this evening is one of the places that both of us enjoy big time! :) (I mean with dad being a foodie and a spicy foodie at that...;) )

Ohk Im hungry now....going to go make myself a glass of Tang until dinnertime.:)

I got up this morning and went about checking my email where I was faced with this peice of upsetting news from the University that I planned to continue and do my Dance Therapy course from,from next year after I finished getting my Bachelors Degree.

Now to bring everyone up to speed about why Im so dissapointed about this.I have been working towards becoming a dance therapist for quite a while now.Perhaps about 5 yrs to say in the least.I even took time off school/college to decide what I wanted to get into and do full time.In this time that I took off i concentrated on dance different aspects of it so as to not feel totally out of it.At the time I thought there would be undergraduate courses in Dance Therapy,on finding out soon after that there wasnt I decided to go back to college and get my bachelors degree in psychology... which im sure EVERYONE has more than idea of how long it took me to even get that field!!! (If not, read thru http://eau-de-vie.livejournal.com/28557.html) Anyway,after finally getting psych and being totally in touch with the dance therapy co -ordinator from this university I had made up my mind that by the time Im done out here I could go join up with them.Was so happy that things seem to finally be getting on track with me....anyway,been in touch with the co ordinator, who might I add is a gem of a person,throughout this time to provide me with updates on whats going on etc.
So,yday I decided to email them again (co ordinator and the admissions office(David) )so send me the admissions packet as well as info I might need for my application next year,as Id have to send in the package by September this year if I want to have any hope of getting into the program....and then this morning I was faced with this lil email from him.:( :( I immediatly wrote an email to the co ordinator who just replied to my email with all the possible suggestions of what I could do next....which dont get me wrong I appriciate totally.But it still doesnt change the fact that now I am very nervous about what to do next.For me, who has been working towards getting here for as long as I can imagine and now theyre shutting down the program!! Im a bit stumped as to what to do next.Have been searching around for other dance therapy courses that i could possibly & do most importently where....though I have to say I am kinda upset that I had to hear about this at such a point especially being in touch with the admissions office for quite sometime myself.Sadlyt,most of these courses are 2-3 yr part time courses rather than what I was inicially supposed to be doing .. a 1yr full time study course.

If anyone has an idea of any dance therapy courses anywhere...(danieblueeyes, I belive there are some courses in Canada) do let me know.. Ill definatly give it a shot and have a look...as it looks like Im back to the grindstone of looking around for the best place to go for my course.:(:( Am mainly looking around for a 1yr full time study course in Dance Therapy.Thanks.

Now back to looking around for universities and colleges......

As everyone must have gathered by now,the last month or so has been just downright crazy for me.With my exams mainly more than anything else.Now that theyre over. Im so relieved,though I have no clue how Ive done in them Im hoping ive done alright. Ah well, will know about a month from now when the results are out.

Hmm..Dispute my crazy shedule the last couple of weeks,I did manage to squeeze in a bit of get together for my 24th birthday at home this time around.My folks were away on a holiday to Europe.They went to France and Holland.Actually ,are on they way back to Pune as I write this.They got into Mumbai from London at about 11:45 this morning and should be here around 3 Im guessing.Theyve been away for about a month or so,during my exams,bday etc.At least I had a bit of peace and quiet in the house,we'll see how long that lasts for when they get back.(Not to be rude or anything,as I do love them loads,but you have to agree parents can be a handful!!) Though thats probably the most fun I had until my exams got over.They got over on Friday,and then immediatly the next day I zipped off to my Aunts farm with K for my grandmothers 90th birthday,where we took her this chocolate cake.(She like literally all the women in the family LURVES chocolate).K had a lot of fun too playing with my neice(my cousins daughter),they were inseparable throughout the entire time we were at the farm.It was so sweet,Aranya(my neice) couldnt let him go.*laughs* Anyway,will let the pictures do most of the talking there.Will get the pictures of my gmum cutting her cake sometime soon as my Aunt has them on her camera.:) The day after was Ks bday,sadlydont have many pictures of that,though we went to ZK's for dinner..

Okay,Here are some long overdue pictures of when K,Pragati(and her bf) and me went down to Goa before my exams and then My birthday,Gmums birthday and our Farm visit. Though I have very conveinently edited the pictures of Goa with Pragatis bf coz truth be told... i dont like the guy.:P More about that when i really want to get into how gross the guy actually is...yennyway.. for now... AND THEY ARE OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY EXAMS ARE FINALLY OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D;D;D

No clue how i did in my specials as abnormal went kinda crappy but heck at least theyre over!!! gosh i feel like i havnt slept in weeks!! Going in for a nap now...will update...(if theres anything to update on) a lil later.:)

_{Exam update....Studying for Social Psych...exam tmw so reading thru everything over and over again... hoping I remember this stuff for the paper.Everyone says that social psych is very genreal every day appllied stuff...well if only i could answer my papers like that.I would definatly do well then...Anyway, realise that I have to still complete my English portion for the 29th.ARGH! :P}

My hunny ( as in K) went out and got himself a new cellphone...hes been wanting this one for a while now,and now its sitting nice and pretty,charging on my living room table till he gets back to my place from doing a couple of things.:):)

I present his new toy......isnt it SWEET!!!!!!!????

For those of you who dont know... its the latest Moto RAZR V3i ...So so hot!! :D Best part is hes given me the go ahead to take as many pictures as I want with it for my LJ...how nice is that?

Im downright JEALOUS! but hey..... his toy..... my toy right? :D
